Democrats in the Maryland House of Delegates have introduced a bill that will force lawful gun owners to carry hundreds of thousands of dollars in liability insurance if they want to carry their firearm outside the home. The left is becoming increasingly desperate to find ways to infringe the Second Amendment after the Supreme Court’s Bruen decision in 2022. Since that decision prevents them from outright gun bans, the Democrats’ new strategy is to make gun ownership too expensive.
Delegate Terri Hill (D) introduced the new draconian anti-gun measure, which reads in part:
“A person may not wear or carry a firearm unless the person has obtained and is covered by liability insurance… to cover claims for property damage, bodily injury, or death arising from an accident resulting from the person’s use or storage of a firearm or up to $300,000 for damages arising from the same incident, in addition to interest and costs.”
By way of comparison, car owners in most states are only required to carry about $100,000 in liability insurance. Meanwhile, 2.5 times as many people are killed in auto accidents yearly than people who die from firearm violence.
If gun owners want to know how much their monthly insurance bill will be in Maryland if this becomes law, it will be more than three times as much as their car insurance bill. Just to exercise a right that precedes the Constitution of the United States of America.
Here’s a scary addendum: Hill’s legislation even applies to state and local cops. Only active-duty military and federal law enforcement officers will be allowed to carry their firearms without having $300,000 in liability insurance. Gee, we wonder why the Democrats only want federal cops and the military to have firearms but not the general population or local cops.
