The Democrats are starting to see their precious hold on the election slip. Whether it’s because their legal warfare is flopping (Trump’s document case got tossed) or the recent assassination attempt, panic is definitely setting in.
Just a few days ago, an anonymous senior House Democrat reportedly told Axios news, “We’ve all resigned ourselves to a second Trump presidency.”
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, never one to admit defeat, had some choice words for the poor anonymous senior Democrat: “Retire.” She added, “If you’re a ‘senior Democrat’ with this outlook, you should retire and make room for “true leadership that refuses to resign themselves to fascism.”
AOC emphasized that such sentiments contradict the Democratic Party’s longstanding warnings about right-wing threats to democracy. She pointed out the inconsistency of Democrats who previously condemned Trump’s authoritarian tendencies now accepting his potential re-election. She added this kind of leadership is practically worthless to the American people. She suggested that the Senior Democrat and others like them should “retire.”
Trump, who has never formally conceded the 2020 election, continues to claim electoral fraud. AOC has actively opposed such rhetoric, recently initiating impeachment efforts against conservative Supreme Court justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas.
The episode underscores a growing rift within the Democratic ranks over how to confront Trumpism, particularly as the Republican National Convention commences amid internal GOP uncertainties about Trump’s voter appeal.
Representative Don Bacon summed up Republican hopes for the convention with a straight face, calling for “stability” and a “lack of drama.” Because, obviously, Trump comes with a never-ending parade of drama. Between the lawsuits and the recent assassination attempt, the GOP nominee has been at the center of a media circus that could rival a reality TV show. It’s like he’s got a season pass to the chaos rollercoaster, ensuring the party never has a dull moment.
